Smithsonian Lecture: "When Birds Collide - Birdstrike Identification at the Smithsonian"

By John Beetham
Created 03/03/2008 - 2:51pm
May 10th, 2008 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm

Dr. Carla Dove will present a lecture titled "When Birds Collide - Birdstrike Identification at the Smithsonian" at the Smithsonian Naturalist Center [1].

This talk will summarize research on the identification of species of birds from fragmentary feather evidence that is recovered from bird/aircraft collisions (birdstrikes).  Each year, civil and military aviation suffers millions of dollars in damage as a result of birdstrikes. Once the species of bird that is causing damage is known, airfield managers and engineers can work to prevent this from happening. Dr. Dove will present the techniques used here at the NMNH to identify birdstrikes, and also show some of the other types of feather cases that we help solve.
