Pennyfield Lock
RSVP to trip leader Paul DeAnna at (202) 544-2680. DC Audubon will visit Pennyfield Lock, part of the C&O Canal National Historical Park in Montgomery County, MD.
This area along the Potomac River is well known for an abundance of Spring migrants and a variety of breeding birds. We can expect several warblers, including Prothonotary, which breed here, and others just passing through. In addition, various Vireos, Tanagers, Orioles and other colorful songsters should be out in force. Meet at the Lock at 7:00 a.m.
When you RSVP, please let the trip leader know if you need a ride or are willing to take carless participants. This trip is limited to 18 participants, so RSVP as soon as possible and inform the trip leader if you reserve but need to drop out.
Directions: from the Beltway (I-495) take River Road (exit 39) west 3.3 miles to Potomac. From the intersection with Falls Road (2nd traffic light), continue on River Rd. 5.1 miles to Pennyfield Lock Road on the left. Take this road to the very end, bearing left at the bottom of the hill, and continuing to a small parking lot where a gated road leads to the lock just east.
