Little Bennett

June 2nd, 2007 7:00 am to 1:00 pm

Join trip leaders Dhananjaya Katju (202-557-6892) and John Beetham (202-628-8442) for a field trip to Little Bennett Regional Park in upper Montgomery County, MD. RSVP by phone or by the field trip contact form [0].

This 3,700-acre park near Clarksburg is known for a good concentration of breeding birds. The park has a mix of habitats in various stages of succession, including fields, scrub, and woodlands. A Red-headed woodpecker was seen in recent years. Yellow-breasted Chat, Louisiana Waterthrush, Prairie, Kentucky, Worm-eating, and Blue-winged Warblers are possible, along with various vireos, tanagers, orioles, thrushes, and others.

We will start from the small dirt parking area on Kingsley Trail just east of Clarksburg Road (Md. 121). We will walk Kingsley Trail toward the Schoolhouse, then up the hill toward the campground area (Purdum trail); finally, we will return to our cars and walk the other side of the Kingsley Trail toward Earl's picnic area, stopping along the way. Insect repellent & sunscreen highly recommended. This is a half-day trip. Bring drinks and snacks if desired.

Directions: From I-270, roughly 15 mi. n. of Beltway, exit on Clarksburg Road east (exit 18). At the first light beyond the exit, make a left onto Clarksburg Road. Go 2.7 miles (do not not turn on Md. 355 to Park HQ), to where Hyattstown Mill road is on left, and Kingsley Trail parking area on right. If you are unfamiliar with the area, please consult a map, since odometer readings may vary.
