Ban the Bags Campaign
Sign our online petition asking Mayor Fenty to support legislation to ban plastic bags from DC.
Help Ban Plastic Bags from Washington, DC!
We, the undersigned, support the Audubon Society of the District of Columbia in their effort to ban the use of plastic bags in grocery stores. This will reduce DC’s impact on climate change and clean up litter from our streets and parks.
Many countries and cities around the world have already taken measures to ban plastic bags and the US is starting to catch up with this movement. In March 2007, San Francisco became the first US city to ban plastic bags from grocery stores. Paris and Ireland have also passed similar legislation.
Let’s be at the forefront of this movement and become the second US city to ban plastic bags.
Whereas 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide every year, with the US alone consuming 100 billion of them;
Whereas only .6 percent of plastic bags in the US get recycled;
Whereas 5 billion plastic bags end up as windblown litter each year;
Whereas plastic bags take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade and break down into tiny toxic bits;
Whereas the manufacture, transportation, and disposal of plastic bags use large quantities of non-renewable resources, especially petroleum;
Whereas hundreds of thousands of marine animals, including endangered sea turtles, die every year when they eat plastic bags mistaken for food;
Whereas the District of Columbia has committed to a Clean City Initiative,
We support the introduction of legislation to ban the use of plastic bags by grocery stores.
