C&O CANAL: DATA INPUT INSTRUCTIONS

This year, for the first time, observers for the C&O Canal Midwinter Bird Survey may submit their data online, through the website. Online submission has the advantage of reducing the amount of data entry required of the count compilers, and thus it will make it possible to publish the results more quickly than in the past. If you wish to use this method, follow the instructions below.

Instructions for Entering Data:

1. Register with the website, using the link in the left sidebar.

2. From the survey announcement page, click "update bird counts" at the bottom of the page. This will bring up a list of mile segments. Click on "add count" or "update count" for the mile you wish to enter, then add your data via the checklist. Each mile must be entered separately.

3. Submit the checklist to add it to the database. Your report will be added automatically to the tally on the survey announcement page. (Results for individual miles will become available sometime later.) Repeat steps 2 and 3 as necessary until all of your miles are entered.

Note: If you saw a species not included in the checklist, or if you need help with any of the steps above, contact the webmaster or email canalcount@gmail.com. If someone else has already entered data for your sector, contact us for guidance.

If you use the online data entry method, please email us the names of any additional observers for your segments, so that we can credit all volunteers properly.

If you prefer to submit by email or regular mail, you may do that also, following the instructions provided on the count checklist.
