Glover-Archbold Park

Glover-Archbold Park is another important migrant trap in northwest Washington. Like Battery Kemble, Glover-Archbold is a strip of forest running south from Van Ness Street to Canal Road. A stream, Foundry Branch, runs through the park to the Potomac. The most interesting section for birders is just above Reservoir Road. Follow the trail that runs north into the park.

What to see: The park is generally good for bird species that prefer forest and edge habitats. Go during spring and fall migration to look for warblers and thrushes. Veeries breed in the park; yellow-throated vireos and Kentucky warblers have attempted breeding in the past. Pileated woodpeckers are residents. In winter, look for winter wrens along the stream and white-throated sparrows in the brushy areas.

By public transportation: The D3 and D6 run along Reservoir Road and stops near the entrance to the park. (If you are coming from the east, it will be right after the French Embassy.) Both routes connect to the Red Line at Dupont Circle. The N2, N6, and N8 routes stop on Cathedral Avenue near the north end of the park. The N2 and N6 pass the Dupont Circle station on the Red Line; the N8 has transfer points at Tenleytown / AU and Van Ness.
