Anacostia Park

Anacostia River Park runs along portions of the Anacostia River from Prince Georges County in Maryland to the river's confluence with the Potomac. For birders, the best areas are those on either side of the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge. Poplar Point at the far south end of the park provides views of a different part of the Anacostia River.

What to see: In winter, watch for gulls, ducks, grebes, and other waterbirds. Shorebirds may use the playing fields in migration at high tide; at low tide check the mudflats for gulls and terns. Unusual birds for D.C. sometimes appear in a “wetlands” area near the Pool and Recreation Center. Watch the sky for hawks.

By public transportation: One can reach the park by walking south from the Potomac Avenue station on the Blue and Orange Lines and across the river on the Pennsylvania Avenue bridge. Several bus lines, including the B2, V7, V8, V9, M6, and U2, run close to the park.
