Kenilworth Park

Kenilworth Park runs along the east bank of the Anacostia River just south of the Aquatic Gardens. The dominant habitats in Kenilworth Park are open fields and managed meadows. The south end of the football field provides views of the Anacostia River. The north end of the park has some views of Kenilworth Marsh. A visit to Kenilworth Park is a good follow-up (or prelude) to a walk in the Aquatic Gardens.

What to see: Kenilworth Park is the most likely site in D.C. to see such open-country birds as meadowlarks, bobolinks, and pipits in migration. Note that none of these is guaranteed on any given visit. The playing fields and wet spots are good places to check for shorebirds at high tide during May and August. Falcons and northern harriers appear here occasionally in winter. Other species reported here in recent years include field, savannah, vesper, and grasshopper sparrows; red-headed woodpecker; horned lark; and blue grosbeak.

By public transportation: The closest Metro station is Minnesota Avenue on the Orange Line. Use the west exit for a pedestrian bridge that crosses 295. Walk one block west to Kenilworth Terrace, and then two blocks north to the park entrance. The U6 bus stops near the entrance of the park; you can board this route from the east side of the Minnesota Avenue station on the Orange Line.
