Polar Bears Listed As Threatened Under Endgangered Species Act

The Polar Bear is now listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.  The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made the announcement yesterday, 14 May 2008, with the disclaimer that the decision should not be “misused” to regulate global warming.

Maryland Considering Banning Plastic Bags

It was a great way to start the morning today when I turned on the news to a story that the entire state of Maryland is considering a total ban on plastic bags!  The legislation is sponsored by Delegate Todd Schuler (D) and has bipartisan support with more than 20 cosponsors.

And, on February 25, the Annapolis City Council voted to cut plastic bag distribution by major grocery and drugstore chains by 40%.  The chains have been given until May 31, 2009 to reach the target.  Mayor Ellen Moyer (D) is distributing several thousand cloth bags to citizens to encourage the use of reusable bags.

Gimme an E! Gimme an S! Gimme an A! What's that spell? Endangered Species Act!

On February 27, 2008, we came one step closer to getting the red knot listed on the federal List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife.  Senators Cardin (D-MD), Menendez (D-NJ), and Lautenberg (D-NJ) sent a letter to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne urging him to place the rufa subspecies of the red knot on the list.

DC Environmental Film Festival

The DC Environmental Film Festival is coming up on March 11 - 22!  It looks like another good year for birds.  Here are just a few bird-related (& some indirectly bird-related) films.  For a complete listing, go to www.dcenvironmentalfilmfest.org.

Whole Foods vs. Safeway

Whole Foods is banning plastic bags!  Starting on Earth Day 2008, all of its 270 North American stores will stop offering plastic bags and instead offer recycled paper bags or reusable bags.  Think of all the plastic that will be saved by eliminating the distribution of 150 million bags a year!

Operation High Roller saves raptors

I saw a press release this morning that captured my attention.  The US Fish & Wildlife Service was investigating roller pigeon clubs.  Roller pigeon clubs?  I’ve never heard of those.  Sounds like a cool bird club, I wonder if I should join.  I did a quick google & my stomach immediately dropped and felt sick.  I couldn’t believe my eyes, I felt so sick.
